Andy Warhol (American, 1928-1987), Truman Capote, 1980. Gelatin Silver Print, 10 x 8 in. Gift of The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc., 2008.40.114 © The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc.
Even at a distance, the blur suggests motion but also liquidity, as if the image were still in the process of development. Warhol’s portrayal of Capote blurs the surface of the photograph along with the taxonomic descriptions that can both make and unmake a subject. Even as the shot promises to expose the “truth” of its subject and the relations between subject and photographer, the suggestive surface of the photograph leaves us with a soliciting provocation that never settles.
